Director of Underwriting
In 1980, he joined St Katherine Insurance Company, underwriting US Property and Casualty insurance. From 1985, following the purchase of St Katherine by The St Paul Companies and the merger with their existing London underwriting operations, he headed up the Casualty and PI insurance and reinsurance underwriting teams.
In 1998, Martin was appointed CEO of St Paul Insurance Company. In 2002, Martin took up the additional responsibility of CEO of the St Paul at Lloyd's Managing Agency. In 2006 he assumed responsibility for the International businesses of St Paul, comprising UK, Ireland, Lloyd's and Canada, and later held the same position for Travelers following their merger.
Martin left Travelers in 2009 to pursue a Lloyd's start-up plan with corporate and independent investors, which led to the launch of an SPS for the 2012 underwriting year.
In November 2011, he joined Mitsui Sumitomo at Lloyd's as Director of Underwriting.

Syndicate Performance Manager
The Syndicate Performance Management team has a focus on identifying and mitigating risks that could prevent underwriting from achieving its objective of profitability and growth. Key focus areas include: -
- Developing the Syndicate Annual Business Plan
- Underwriting Strategy and Planning
- Delegated Authority & Coverholder management
- Reinsurance placement oversight and management
- Exposure and Aggregate management
- Underwriting systems and controls
- Underwriting standards and independent audit
- Data quality of management information
In summary, the provision of technical input, planning, analysis, control and underwriting review.
Interim Chief Risk Officer
The Actuarial team will work closely with the Syndicate Performance Management team on pricing and, in addition, will have responsibility for: -
- Advising on the level of reserves
- Implementing the Syndicate's internal capital model
In addition, the Actuarial team works with underwriting management on identifying and validating new business opportunities.
General Counsel & Company Secretary
The Legal team is an engaged strategic partner providing advice to the business and the Board in the following areas:-
- Operational legal matters
- Legal risk
- Product development
- Claims counsel
- Governance and ethics
- Oversight of external advisors and outside services
Strategic Marketing & Communications
This department is responsible for the strategic management of our distribution and for implementing a professional communication programmes: -
- Broker performance - analysed quarterly, in respect of profitability, growth and commission
- Brokers ranked according to performance and plans agreed for growth and profitability improvement as appropriate
- Responsible for professional broker results bulletins and for controlling agency appointments
- Internal and external communications programmes - embedded in the business strategy
- Greater trade press coverage highlighting MSIG's ambitions and differentiators
